In the fragment “a unique status” (l.25), the use of the article “a” can be explained by the sound of the semivowel at the beginning of “unique”.

    A diferença de se usa "a" ou "an"


    O real jeito de se distinguir o que se usar é pelo som da palavra, ou seja, pela primeira sílaba.  


    Palavras nas quais a primeira sílaba tem um som de consoante usa-se "a".  


    A palavra "unique" não tem som de vogal.  


    Então nesse caso usa-se "a" 


    "A unique" ao contrário de "AN unique".
