I don't think that followers and adepts are diferent.

The forest-bathing spirit has gained followers in the United States,

The forest-bathing spirit has gained adepts in the United States.

There was a change, but not significant.

Adept is an adjective and means:  able, accomplished, adroit, dexterous, expert, masterful, masterly, practised, proficient, skilful, skilled, versed. While follower means believer, disciple. Therefore, they have different meanings.

Ao buscar o significado das palavras "adeptos" e "seguidores" elas definem ações diferenciadas. Respectivamente, uma se refere a quem um conhecimento aprofundo, podem dessa forma aplicá-lo em prol do seus princípios enquanto a outra é uma questão de seguir por achar interessante e fica por isso mesmo. Assim eu interpreto.
