The Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT) set up 250 fake email addresses and counted which got the most spam under different conditions. They found that 97 per cent of those posted as a link on the web page attracted unwanted email almost instantly because spammers use automated tools that sweep the web for recognizable email addresses.
